A £6.25 million challenge prize to improve outcomes for people affected by snakebite in high-burden settings. It calls for innovations that strengthen community responses, speed up access to appropriate care, or improve how treatment is delivered.
As the prize's South Asia outreach partner, MRFRI ran SnakeHacks in Telangana, Coimbatore, Delhi and Guwahati, more than twenty city startup meets and a webinar immersion series to bring Indian innovators into the challenge.

MRFRI's role
South Asia Outreach Partner
MRFRI, hosted within Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth, led outreach, ecosystem engagement and innovator mobilisation for the prize across India and South Asia, working alongside Challenge Works and Wellcome from April to September 2026.
Nationwide outreach & engagement
In-person roadshows across regional hubs, plus virtual sessions for universities, research institutes and regional networks in India and Bangladesh.
Ecosystem access
Connected the prize to a pan-India network of incubators and accelerators reaching more than 4 lakh startups and innovators in healthtech, AI, deeptech, mobility and biotech.
Research & clinical network
Linked innovators with MRV's hospitals, labs and clinicians, and with national agencies such as ICMR, CSIR, BIRAC, DST and MeitY, for research access and clinical feedback.
Every SnakeHack opened with a live scenario: a 35-year-old is bitten at 8:15 pm, 25 km from the nearest primary health centre, and the snake species is unknown. Innovators then mapped where time is lost along the journey, and where new solutions could help.
1
The bite
Most bites happen in rural fields and homes, often at night. Awareness of safe practices and quick recognition of a bite are the first line of defence.
2
First aid & first response
First-responder competence matters more than any medicine. Delays from faith healers, harmful first-aid myths or going to the wrong facility often decide the outcome.
3
Access, transport & referral
Patients may be 25 km or more from the nearest primary health centre. Fast transport and a clear referral to a facility that can treat are critical.
4
Assessment & diagnosis
Clinicians must tell a dry bite from real envenomation, and neurotoxic from haemotoxic cases, to guide treatment. Low-cost diagnostics are still immature.
5
Emergency & supportive care
Antivenom, ventilators and trained staff are often missing at primary centres, so patients get sent onward and lose critical time.
6
Recovery & rehabilitation
Survivors can face lasting disability and costs. Follow-up care and rehabilitation complete the journey.
What we heard from the field
First response is the biggest lever. The right first aid and the right facility save more lives than any single new product.
Primary centres are under-equipped. No antivenom, no ventilators and staff without the confidence or legal cover to treat.
Diagnosis is debated. India uses one polyvalent antivenom, but telling dry bites and envenomation types apart still drives triage.
